Teaching Together, Plant Fun {February 2016}

Welcome to Teaching Together #5!

As a home school mom of two, this year has been full of challenges. Like the fact that I am still trying to get the hang of teaching two kids on two very different levels simultaneously. I have been trying to do better and I know it will be even more important when Emily starts Kindergarten in the fall. This months post is an example of what learning together currently looks like in our home. Marissa is working through the plant section of her science book and today I am going to share a few activities I've added to make things pre-k friendly for Emily.

Identify the parts of a plant

What better way to learn the parts of a plant than with a craft?!

You need:
blue & green construction paper
cupcake wrapper
seeds
pipe cleaners
scissors
glue

I'd explain how to put it together, but I think it explains itself pretty well.
You can also label the parts if you wish.
Roots, stem, leaves, flower & seeds.

Read some books on plants

Books are always a great way to reinforce what you are learning about.
We like these:

Observe different kinds of seeds

I have quite the seed collection so we looked through my packages checking out the different sizes, shapes an colors of the seeds.

If you don't have seeds on hand you could always check out a seed display.
Most stores have all kinds of seeds out this time of the year.

Plant some seeds

We are working on sprouting bean seeds.
It is easy to see by the look on her face that the idea of beans does not impress her.

To easily do this moisten a paper towel, lay the beans on it, fold the paper towel over the beans, put it in a sandwich bag and leave in a sunny window. You need to keep the paper towel damp. After a few days they will sprout and you can observe the different parts of the growing plant.

We also planted a bean in the dirt and a few carrots too.

Waiting on her plants to grow.

Learn with music

Emily is quite the song bird so any time we can incorporate some music into our learning we do.
This one is pretty catchy and cute which typically also translates to "gets old fast" in mom talk. But she loves it.

Our lessons on plants came just in time. We are about a week away from starting our seedlings for our 2016 summer garden. With a little luck and some more training, learning and practice I might just have a couple of green thumbed girls on my hands. So even if Emily never learns to eat her veggies, at least she will be able to grow them :).

Monthly Goals {February 2016}

And just like that the first month of the year is already over!

January was an eventful, surprising and busy month and I would be a complete liar if I didn't say I am so glad it is over. However, even though the month brought some surprises I still did pretty good with my goals. Let's take a look.

Blog-
*Keep posting 4-5 days a week.
*Participate in a giveaway.
*Try to engage more on Twitter.

I can half heartedly cross all of these off. The blog was easy, the giveaway was a lot of fun and I did go to my very first ever Twitter Party for a blog campaign. So I'm going to call it a success.

Family-
*Family Movie Night.
*Family Game Night.
*Celebrate Russ' birthday!

We had THREE movie nights, so maybe that makes up for our lack of a game night? We also had a blast celebrating Russ' birthday!

Fitness-
*Join a new gym on January 1st!
*Work out 4 days a week.
*Stop eating so many cookies. You laugh, but it is true.

I joined the gym bright and early on the first day of the New Year. The new gym is amazing an will save us over $200 a year over the price of the YMCA! I also went 4 times a week, but I can't cross off the cookies. I mean, I had to eat all of them so I could stop eating them ;). February will be better.

Spiritual-
*To read a little bit of God's word every day.
(I often try to do so much in this category that i overwhelms me. This year I would like to try and simplify my goals in this category.)

Fail, I thought with such a simple goal I could cross this off but the craziness of the leak distracted me and I just never got motivated. I will try again.

Home School-
*Resume school on January 4th.
*Begin working with Emily on early reading skills.
*Have the girls write thank you notes.

School is in full swing, I am working with E and even wrote a post about it and the girls had a blast working on and delivering their thank you cards.

Random-
*Fix the wall.... more details on that soon.
*Finally order family photo prints.
*Try to combat winter depression.
*Drop off donation pile sitting in our room.

The wall is fixed, the photos are ordered, I am fighting depression off with a stick and I finally ditched that obnoxious pile that was sitting in our bedroom.

All in all I feel like January was a pretty good month for me. Although the one area I really wanted to succeed in, I feel I failed the most. But with a new month comes new opportunities so we push forward.
Blog-
*Keep posting 4-5 days a week.
*Participate in a giveaway or two.
*Write a post on battling depression.

Family-
*Family Movie Night.
*Celebrate Emily's 5th Birthday.
*Complete the things I love hearts for Marissa, Emily & Russ.

Fitness-
*Work out 4 days a week.
*Stop eating so many cookies. I mean it this time.

Spiritual-
*To read a little bit of God's word every day. Take two.

Home School-
*Stay on track.
*Begin planning our project fair projects.
*Start shopping 2016/2017 curriculum.

Random-
*Finish decorating Marissa's room.
*Valentines Date!
*Girls night out with Anna.
*Start some seedlings.

What goals are you working toward this February?

How To Win My Heart: Tuesday Talk V5

I am pretty excited about todays post. It is fun, light hearted and hopefully a way for you to get to know me a little bit better. Today I am linking up with Andrea from Momfessionals for Show & Tell Tuesday. This weeks topic is all about how you can win my heart.

If you wanted to win my heart here are a few ways that guarantee you will find success.
(In random order)

#1 Take me to try on high heels. I rarely ever buy a pair, but I love nothing more than trying on a pair of 5" strappy stilettos and walking around the shoe department. Because who doesn't want to be 6'3"?! #ReasonsIRarelyWearHeels

#2 Crack a Seinfeld joke. Don't worry if nobody else gets it, I most likely will

#3 Tell me how sweet, cute, smart or well behaved my girls are. What mom doesn't love that!

#4 Give me a hug. Not like a side hug like a real hug. I'm a hugger, I haven't always been but after the tornado happened things just changed.

#5 Don't be afraid to call me out when you see me stumbling. I initially might not respond so well, but with time I'll know that you really care enough to say something. Friends like that are so few and far between.

#6 Text me to just say hi. Some of my favorite texts I get are from my best gal pals saying good morning, especially the ones that come on an oh so dreaded Monday.

#7 Know the key foods to my heart: dark chocolate, salted caramel, tres leches, avocado, spinach dip, mexican food & almost any kind of breakfast pastry.

#8 Ask me to workout with you. Having just read the above list of foods that I love you, now know why I have to workout! A run or a session at the gym is always a good thing in my books.

#9 Sit on my patio with me talking about everything and nothing all at once until late in the night. So many good conversations have happened on that patio.

#10 Challenge me to be a better version of myself.

So there you have it, feel free to "woo" me now ;).

How can your heart be won?

January In Numbers {2016}

I have been a long time fan of the "My Month In Numbers" posts, but I have yet to put one together. I was a bit worried about how uneventful the post may turn out if I am being honest. But hey, even the boring things add up.

Trips to the gym: 16
I've settled on 4 gym trips a week and I am loving that schedule. It's also nice to be work out with this lady at our really nice, brand new gym (that is saving us a TON of money a month). What a blessing all around.

New recipes tried: 3
All breakfast items too. We tried some apple muffins, blueberry muffin and cinnamon roll pancakes.

Episodes of Park & Rec watched: 24
We are loving watching this show. I <3 Ron Swanson.

Cars purchased: 1
A 1955 Chevy

Family movie nights: 3
Cinderella, Minions & Home

Selfies taken: 11
I'm sure there were a few *dozen* more on Snapchat, but these are the ones I grabbed off my phone.

Miles ran: 22
That's the most I've logged since October!

Times the girls told Russ happy birthday: at least 53
They even told him "Happy almost your birthday" for days leading up to the event.

Chalk boards doodled: 4
Winter chalkboards were fun but doing Russ' special birthday board was really neat.

Date nights: 1
1 date night to celebrate the birthday boy!

Pairs of shoes purchased: 2
Since I had some birthday money I snagged a pair of Chacos and some new Brooks running shoes!

Slumber parties the girls had: 21
So glad that is over.

Years Russ turned: 36
The girls always want the candles to match the birthday but some how I sold them on just one.

Trips to IKEA: 1
We even squeezed in a stop at Trader Joes!

Shades of blue I debated: 13
I feel pretty confident that I picked the best one.

Blog posts wrote: 24
Sh-woo! January was a busy month!

Days it was above 60 degrees: 3
And they were glorious!

And that's a wrap on January.
I can't wait to see what February brings!
