Friday Highlights 5.8.15

Hello Friday!

It is officially the first Friday of summer in the Newman house! We finished school at 11:38 a.m. Monday May 4th! Not that we are the least bit excited ;). The rest of our week has been spent playing, reading books, watching movies and thinking about all things summer.

Russ even joined in the early "summer" fun. The stretch between New Years Day and Memorial day is always long and never easy. He decided to take a few vacation days and enjoy the beginning of summer with us. Naturally, it decided to rain (again) and ruin all of our plans #FAIL.

But at least we are all home together for a long weekend!

Here are this weeks Friday Highlights.

{ONE} Blog Highlights

This week I shared... My monthly goal post recapping April and setting new goals for May.

The final post in my "Ask a home school mom" mini series. This post wrapped up the remaining questions my readers submitted.

{TWO} Mothers Day

As most of you (hopefully) know, Sunday is Mothers Day. First of all I want to take the chance to tell two very special women Happy Mothers Day. Russ and I are both very blessed to have wonderful moms and we love and appreciate them both dearly.

I also read this article the other night about what moms really mean when they say they don't want anything for Mothers Day. It is pretty spot on. So Russ, if your reading this check out the article ;).
Lastly my friend Keri knocked it out of the park with another great post about "the forgotten moms". I would really encourage you to read her post and challenge you to make a positive impact by remembering these precious women on Mothers Day.

{THREE} Mary, Mary...

One place I love to spend hours of my summer playing is in my garden. Not only is it therapy for me, it provides our family with fresh fruits and vegetables, it doesn't get much better than that.
This past weekend I planted my garden and I thought it would be fun to track it's progress as it grows.

Sugar Babies and Cantaloupe

Jalapenos, Butternut Squash & Zucchini

Mild Jalapenos, Carrots, Romaine & Cucumbers

Tomatoes

Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Anaheim Peppers, Banana Peppers, Moracino Peppers

My 2015 Summer Garden!

{FOUR} Awana Awards
   This girl.

Words can not say how proud I am of this girl!

Wednesday night we attended the 2014/2015 Awana awards ceremony. Marissa received 2 ribbons for completing two books in one year. Not only did she finish two books she completed the reviews for them and earned her extra credit pins. She memorized a total of 86 verses in one year, many of which she still knows.

I love how much she loves Awana and the firm foundation of truth it helps us to build in her life. It is just another way God plants seeds of truth in her heart.

{FIVE} Girl Mom Series
This week Ashley from Everything's Hunky Dorey shared about her daughter Stella for my 'Girl Mom' series.

I loved reading about her relationship with Stella and how different things have been as a girl mom.

Make sure you stop by Everything Hunky Dorey to check out more about Ashley and her sweet family.

If you're interested in sharing your story about being a girl mom fill out this survey and I will be in touch.

The article on what moms wants is so on point! That's exactly what I'm hoping for (along with perhaps a FlashAir;) )! Now, if only I could convince my little man that sitting still for an entire movie is a good idea…

Your garden looks awesome! I so wish I had a green thumb. Alas, I do not. *sigh*

Have the best weekend, and have a FABULOUS Mother's Day!!

  4. My favorite part was "I don't want to be punished on Monday for taking Sunday off". So true. It will come, eventually I think both of my girls were around 4, boys may take a bit longer too.

I can only grow food, plants are all doomed for death. At least food has a purpose other than just being pretty. Maybe that makes the difference.

You to friend! Happy Mothers Day!

  9. I read that Scary Mommy article and loved it as well! I am jealous of your garden! We have not yet gotten our beds ready in the new house. Hopefully next year. My old house had a pretty fierce and growing garden full of fresh veggies and fruit each summer. Looking forward to watching your garden's progress!

  11. It is one of my favorite places, thank you!

We had a great one, hope you did too! Thanks for reading.

  12. I know just how that goes. When we moved in here I didn't have a summer garden that year, there just wasn't time. I was able to get my beds done by late summer and plant some fall crops though. Maybe you will be able to do the same! Gardens are simply just the best. I feel SO happy when I am harvesting my crops.

  13. I don't really either :(. Give me a houseplant and I will kill it in record time, lol. Something about the garden is different for me. Keep trying! Maybe you will find something that works for you.

  14. Did you get yours in?! I sure hope so. I used to always plant mine over Mothers Day weekend but the past couple years I have got it in a bit earlier.

Wahoo! I will be emailing you within the next week or so with a date. So excited to have you join in!

  15. No, hubby was gone on Saturday which was the only nice day. Sunday rained allllll day, ugh! I look forward to your email!!

  16. Ugh. I know just how that can be. We must have sent the rain your direction, sorry. It rained here. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was nice to not have to water my garden. But oh my goodness gracious! Hopefully you get a chance soon!

  17. Yay! They finally showed up and I can catch up on your life! Good job Marissa!! How awesome. And yay for summer!!

Love the garden and your genius idea of using the lattice for the cukes to grow up. And that is a lot of peppers. What do you do with them all?!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I know it's crazy! It just fixed itself.... so weird.

Thank you thank you. We had the lattice already so it was a free easy fix.

I have no idea, lol. I can a lot of jalapeno pepper jelly but we always have WAY to many... some year I will finally scale them back to a reasonable amount.

  19. You can't beat a free and easy fix!!

What do you use the pepper jelly for? Our climate isn't quite right for peppers so they are always a bust for me...maybe one day after Thomas builds my greenhouse for me (we'll probably win the lottery first).

  20. It is hard to beat…. I just wish I knew why it stopped working in the first place ☹. Thanks again for letting me know about it.

Pepper jelly is AMAZING. I usually serve it with cream cheese and you eat it on crackers. It is really good on grilled meat and sandwiches too! I hear you there. It has been cool and wet this year and my peppers are HATING it.
